At first, Austin simply enjoyed reading the kinds of books that were popular with people his age. He liked getting lost in stories and discovering the worlds created by different authors, but he had not yet found a particular genre that captured his imagination.

Those were the years of the big young-adult series, and Austin read them as they arrived. Harry Potter and Twilight were among them, and behind those came a long run of fantasy sagas that he worked through volume by volume. What held him was a world with rules of its own and a story long enough to live inside for a while, and he rarely stopped at one book when there were more of them on the shelf.

C'était l'époque des grandes séries pour adolescents, et Austin les a lues au fil de leur parution. Harry Potter et Twilight en faisaient partie, et derrière elles est venue une longue suite de sagas fantastiques qu'il a parcourues tome après tome. That changed after he watched the 2004 comedy-zombie movie Shaun of the Dead with his family. Its unusual combination of zombies, humour, friendship and family introduced him to the idea that there was an entire genre of books about a zombie apocalypse. Once he discovered it, Austin dived into those stories, eagerly exploring worlds reshaped by the unexpected, where ordinary people faced extraordinary circumstances and every decision could change what happened next.

His interest in zombies soon extended beyond books. As the genre expanded into movies, television and video games, Austin's enthusiasm grew with it. Zombies became a recurring theme in many of the games he enjoyed, allowing him not only to follow a story, but to step inside it, explore its world and confront its challenges for himself.

Son intérêt pour les zombies a vite dépassé les livres. À mesure que le genre gagnait le cinéma, la télévision et les jeux vidéo, l'enthousiasme d'Austin grandissait avec lui. Les zombies sont devenus un thème récurrent dans bon nombre des jeux qu'il aimait, ce qui lui permettait non seulement de suivre une histoire, mais d'y entrer, d'en explorer le monde et d'en affronter les défis lui-même.

Shaun of the Dead remained a favourite zombie movie. Watching it many times with his family made the experience about far more than the film itself. It became time shared together.

One book in the family came long before any of these. Alpenglow was written by Austin's great-great-grandmother, Corrie Birdsong Teagarden, and published in 1936. Four generations later, the family still had a reader in it.

For Austin, stories were never merely about reaching the ending. They were about entering another world, discovering what waited within it, and sharing the experience with the people he loved.
